22 Nov Let’s talk about cycling & mental health
Our very own club rider Sarah Strong organised an evening of talks on mental health and cycling at the Look Mum No Hands cycle café in Old Street, London on 7th November 2017. It was a complete sellout! The café was packed with a live stream for those who couldn’t get there.
Sarah got the ball rolling by describing a Google search for ‘depressed cyclist’ that threw up a few of images of herself 🙂 And then opened up the discussion with a candid and wry account of her own anxiety and depression and how this has connected with cycling and its community. From her early days volunteering at the Eastway Circuit in 2003 to recent exploits at the BMX track, Sarah talked about the social and physical aspects of cycling – not speaking on behalf of anyone, but herself. “What I hope I can bring is empathy and understanding from my personal experiences but also an informed professional view from working alongside mental health professionals and support staff.”
Sarah has now set up a blog to continue the much-needed conversation – some of which we’ll be having on our bikes, on shitty days. We’re hugely proud of her.
